What does it mean to be an individual in a collective that claims individualism. Individualist as an idea is to be non-collectivist while seeking coexistence. As to give yourself a label, like individualist means that your identity is not your own.
Therefore it is necessary to see individualism as a path of obtainment, not something you can ever truly call yourself, but a goal. An individualist stands as a pursuer of becoming and nurturing individualism. So that one may improve whichever collective you take part in.
Not to accept the world as is, but to see it in it's truest form. Ever changing. It is a fools game to think we will ever achieve the ultimate ah-ha and be done. As for each barrier we overcome, reveals the next mountain peak. But, that is why no matter the timing, it is a worthy pursuit.
"The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish." ~ Charlie Chaplin, from The Great Dictator
